Friends over 40 years

Our memories of Rosie and Roger go back to the 1970’s when Liz and Rosie first met each other and Liz helped Rosie run a play group at the Sports Centre. They lived almost opposite the Hemnall Street Sports Centre where Roger and Andy used to play squash together. Andy’s memories of Roger are of a stylish, handsome, athletic man in his thirties who, annoyingly usually (OK - always) got the ‘upper hand’ in their matches. By the time they moved to Bell Common, memories of squash fade, to be replaced by those of playing bridge (Roger always got the ‘lucky seat’), trips to Covent Garden and magnificent Hipkin hospitality on special occasions, particularly at Christmas time. We have such strong memories of charades and games that required lightning speed thinking at which the Hipkin family excelled. They have left us with such strong memories filled with laughter and fun. As Roger’s health declined, he and Rosie showed a fortitude and enthusiasm for life. Despite his terrible bereavement when Rosie died and his own disabilities, Roger’s spirit was indomitable. Andy and he enjoyed displays of mutual disrespect. When Andy recently pointed out that an alga covered pit at the bottom of his garden was dangerous he said that only a thick Welsh bastard would fall into it. We will miss him greatly.
